American TV sucks

let me just say i think american t.v is the most entertaining in the world.. i love the citcoms (seinfelt, everybody loves raymond ect ect) i grew up with rawhide, the virginian, star treck, rovkford files, starsky and hutch ect ect.. at the moment iam watching americas got talent (maybe it hasnt) but the shows great entertainment.

then i rememberd when i was in the u.s and how i felt american t.v sucked with all those commercials.. tell me do you have non commercial t.v.in the states?.

how much time is given to commersials with a 22 minute seinfet episode?.

Our TV does stink! I would say if you watch a one hour show, you will have 20 minutes worth of commercials! Very annoying!

There aren't any family friendly shows or sitcoms you can watch with children. We are stuck watching cartoons with the children and ushering them from the room for the any sitcoms we might watch. Or we watch something educational.

I miss the days of shows like "Cosby Show'", "Alf" and "Home Improvement". I remember enjoying shows like that where parents didn't have to really sheild children from swearing and inappropriate themes.

I find if we can DVR a show, we get more enjoyment because we can zip through the commercials and avoid them. I wish they weren't there. It is very distracting. It's also probably why we snack while watching TV, we see commercials for food every 7 minutes and go to the kitchen for a snack! How can you stand seeing juicy hamburgers, pizza, soda, chips for so long without desiring them? Of course we also use them for bathroom breaks...just like the song at mid meeting at the kingdom hall!

The best shows seem to be behind us. When they finally come out with a show that peaks your interest, for example, "Lost" and "Heroes", they go on a writers strike and you lose all sense of where the show was and wonder if they are going to drop like, as they do so often. You get tired of it, and you refuse to watch it, knowing they will pull the rug out at any whim. They do suck. Really they do.

I just got used to my daily dose of Conan O'Brian...and now he's gone. It's best to wait for something on DVD...no commercials and you can watch a full season! I've got a few sets I want to get still.

Do you not have to deal with commercials where you are? Or are they much more limited?

Mad Sweeney, you are so right! I remember the feeling of the blinders falling off and that for the first time in my life, at 33 years old, I could make a decision for myself. I had never felt that before!

Thinking and asking questions is what Christians are supposed to do. The bible encourages it. To feel fear of asking questions and that searching for answers is wrong...is wrong.

Starting off by yourself to examine things is scary and necessary.

The internet is portrayed as evil because you can find answers there! It's the same with college.You can find history, others experiences, scholar interpretations of the bible, etc.

When I graduated high school, we under the understanding of the generation meaning that Armageddon would come within the lifetime of those who were old enough to remember WWI. It was 1991. We were told not to make future plans, even giving up marriage or children, yet the Society was making plans to open Patterson in 1995 (if I remember correctly). Back then, I remember thinking, how silly of them seeing the end was coming! I didn't think of how that should have told me they were falsly prophesying! I can see that now. It was wrong of them, and still is wrong, that they play with the future of people and put them through suffering and turmoil while they prosper and don't suffer.

Keep in mind that when Christ asked his disciples if they too wanted to leave him, they said "Lord, you have the sayings of everlasting life". They didn't turn to the Watchtower, they didn't turn to other men. They turned to the Lord. This scripture gets twisted by the Governing Body and they apply it to themselves. They say are the channel Christ uses. But this isn't true. If it was, they would welcome questions and the truth would shine and be undestructable. No question would shake it.

Rely on God and the Holy Spirit to lead you. It was enough for centuries and it still is.

Pray for strength and the leading of the Spirit. It will lead you! Buy a new bible with several translations in it. That was my first step! I was so scared in the bookstore that someone might see me in the religion section. It is sad to think how scared I was! But do it. It was the best money ever spent! Compare them as you read. Really read the context and ask for the Spirit to guide you in your reading. Your eyes will open and you will see the bible in a whole new light! You will find comfort and revelations! God will take you under his wing. When I took it with me to a circuit assembly (we were new to the area so I could get away with not feeling like I was under suspicion by using it) I was floored with how much the scripture was twisted to support their teachings! I nearly got up from my seat and screamed! I was so ready to walk out! We left at lunch time and went to the zoo instead! We had a wonderful time and I felt so much closer to God there than at the assembly! We enjoyed our hotel and watched the other JW's leave for the assembly and went to the mall! It's now become our tradition at that time of year!

When people tell you that you need the Society to guide you and interpret the bible, it's not true. The bible itself says that the spirit will guide us. It is all we need.

Your awakening is your own. Your journey is your own. It isn't easy, but it's worth the effort. Whatever you choose, I hope you find peace. I believe God leads us when it is time and we are ready. He is patient with us, much more so than we are with ourselves! We desire knowledge and wisdom so much that we are willing to jump at it before we may be ready to understand it! Take it at your own pace. Your peace will come. Best wishes to you!

I've just lost a Loved one

the thing that sucks is that they are very much alive & we are literally less than five miles apart from each other everyday.

i had a long talk with one of my siblings today.

i've been getting a really weird vibe lately...today it was confirmed that i will be shunned from here on out from them.

I'm sorry. It's a loss almost harder than a death...well, maybe it is harder.

With this kind of loss the wound festers because death isn't the one stopping the love and association. There is hope that springs eternal. It gets in the way of the grieving process because you know the person still walks the earth. That their heart and mind might one day change. Maybe. Probably not though.

That pain rears it's head when you hear about them, when you think about all they and you and the children are missing out on.

It digs everytime you think of their callousness.

It haunts your heart. You wonder why they don't feel the pain as intensly and see their error. How can they cut out their heart and cast us off? How can you do that to your child, your friend, your sibling. So many times it's done before you even get df'd or disassociate. They hear a doubt, a problem that you have before you have even decided to leave, and they abandon you. It shows how shaky their faith is. They must be holding on by a thread themselves and are afraid it will snap.

It's hard. I can't say it gets easier. I don't know how to comfort you, but offer encouragement that you are not alone. You have friends that understand here. We share a common bond and sufferings. May you find a way to make peace with it.

How Did You Know The One You're With Was "The One" ?

i'm feeling all warm and fuzzy, love-y and romantic because of my upcoming marriage, so i ask you all:.

was there something that happened to prove to you that your spouse or mate was "the one"?.

my man gave up his longest and best friend.

I couldn't tell you "how" but I can tell you when!

We were at a Thursday night meeting, and I was holding his arm during the song (middle one I think), and all of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks. I loved him. I fell in love that moment.

I guess the kind, generous spirit of his just had made it's way to my heart. I just knew. Just like when I woke up to the truth of the Watchtower. Once you know...you know.

Later that night, we were at his parents house, and I just had to tell him. The funny thing is, he said he was getting ready to tell me the same thing! He fell in love that night too at the meeting. I guess cupid had fired off an arrow!

As I left his house (he lived with his parents and I lived with mine), I said I wanted to take it slow and he kissed me on the forehead. Our first kiss.

After that you couldn't pull us apart with wild horses! We were such kissy faces we got lectured all the time!

We were engaged about a month later! So much for slow It was a wonderful whirlwind of romance! We were married 8 months later. It would have been sooner if we financially could have done it.

why i wept bitterly in front of two elders......

not sure if i ever shared this...but have seen several "sharing" threads here lately and it motivated me..... when i met with the co and po about some doubts and an important question....and when i got the co's answer.....i could not speak....i put my head down and just started crying...not sobbing cause i fought it back...finally the only words to come out were..."i am going to have to leave my wife and son"....and they were like wtf?...but in jw lingo of course.

see i knew in that instant...that very moment....that i had been lied to my entire life...and my stack of doubts i had been piling on the shelf and waiting on jehovah were all valid....and i knew i would never fit in again...not even with my wife and son...that i would never be the spiritual head they needed and wanted.....that was almost 4 years ago...man time flies...and yep...now i am separated from my jw wife...and yep...i did not fit in...not even with her...and my son is older now and moved out but we are not close.

btw...i had printed out all 12 places in rev.

Thank you for sharing that and the emotional toll it took on you.

At least you got someone to admit what you knew! Isn't it a shame that most don't know this and just take for granted what they are told by WT!

i was replying to flippers re: did you exit the witnesses due to injustices/differences with doctrine - both?

and i found myself writing my experience and it got a bit long so i am posting here.

i am sorry i cant tell you my story more specifically but we have been front-page news in our area to do with our beliefs and some of the steps i have taken more recently to show my disgust at the injustices have been unique so it would be easy to recognise me.

Odd CO talk...ever hear anything like this?

had our co visit last month.

normally the guy has all the charisma and charm of ben stein from "ferris buhler's day off", but he managed to give a talk that was actually coherent one night.. here is the rough outline:.

the theme was about the difference between "justice", "mercy", and "undeserved kindness".. situation 1: adam and eve sinned.

I heard that same talk over 5 years ago.

It must be an old outline they are using again. Recycled garbage!

I like your observations though! It's great your mind is working and seeing these things! Thanks for pointing it out for others to think about too!

who was your first non jw friend

since i was not raised in the "truth", i have been able to reconnect with many older friends that i left behind.

one in particular is very close to me and we now get together about once a week for dinner or drinks.

his wife and my wife have also become very close as well.

As a little girl, my neighbor. We still try to keep in touch a little. Our parents still live next door to each other so we hear about each other and our kids.Facebook helps too!

As an adult as I left...again a neighbor! Funny how that works! We've moved since, but I keep in touch a few times a year with our past neighbors! They can really give a lot of support and a fresh view on life!
